Montenegro is fully committed to implementing the recommendations of the UNCAC with active involvement of civil society

Feb. 22, 2025

At the 16th session of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) Implementation Review Group, held from February 17 to 21, 2025, in Vienna, representatives from the Agency for Prevention of Corruption announced the finalization of the Action Plan for implementing the recommendations from the UNCAC review. This plan, developed by the Agency as the national coordinator for the implementation of the Convention, marks a key step in enhancing Montenegro's anti-corruption policies in line with international standards.

Montenegro, as a long-time signatory of the UNCAC Coalition’s "Transparency Pledge," places special importance on the active involvement of civil society in implementing the Convention. This approach not only increases transparency and public trust but also strengthens institutional mechanisms for corruption prevention.

During the session, representatives from the Agency and Helena Vizi, a representative of Montenegro's Mission to the UN, OSCE, and other international organizations in Vienna, met with Danella Newman from the UNCAC Coalition to discuss new models of cooperation with the civil sector. The discussions focused on enhancing the role of non-governmental organizations in evaluating and implementing anti-corruption policies, as well as the technical and expert support from international partners in implementing UNCAC recommendations.

Montenegro has been a signatory to the United Nations Convention against Corruption since 2003, and as an independent state, it ratified the Convention in 2006. This commitment obliges Montenegro to continuously strengthen its capacity and develop appropriate mechanisms for the effective implementation of anti-corruption standards set by the Convention.

The Agency for Prevention of Corruption remains dedicated to enhancing international cooperation and institutional capacity for implementing UNCAC, with the goal of building a more transparent, accountable, and legally secure society.
